Japanese firm ACCESS hasannounced (Via MacRumors) that Apple has agreed to license some of the patents related to Palm’s smartphone technology. Access had acquired these patents when it purchased PalmSource back in 2005. The portfolio of patents, which was licensed to Samsung in 2011, includes intellectual property from Palm, PalmSource, Bell Communications Research, and Geoworks.
Apple has reportedly paid 1 billion Yen to ACCESS, in order to licsence these patents. That translates to roughly 10 million US dollars. I find it quite interesting that Apple has decided to purchase these patents, as in the past Apple Co-Founder, Steve Jobs had engaged in a heated email exchange with then Palm CEO Ed Colligan where he said Palm’s patents were essentially worthless.
